Indigenous Voices and Messages - We are all flowers in the Great Spirits Garden. We share a common root, and the root is Mother Earth. The Garden is beautiful because it has different colors in it, and those colors represent different tracitions and cultural backgrounds. --Grandfather David Monngye, Messenger for the Hopi Prophecies, 1977 -- All things are connected like the blood that unites us, We did not weave the web of life. We are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. -- Chief Seattle, Susquamish, 1854 -- The environment isn't over here. The environment isn't over there. You are the environment. -- Faith Keeper Oren Lyons, Onondaga, 2000

Ages ago the First Peoples of the Americas were assigned the responsibility to be care takers of the Earth. That responsibility has been maintained and continues today. Native peoples across the Americas have been calling everyone back to the circle, the interconnected hoop of life. We are honored to have several contemporary indigenous women and men share the voices of their hearts, their concerns, and their wise thoughts with us.

As we look back we all have ancestors that lived in good relationship with the land, for some it’s more recent than for others. For the Earth and humans to thrive we need to awaken the dormant connections and weave them into our “modern” lives. As you listen to these individuals share their perspectives, use the ears of your heart. Perhaps you already live in good relationship with the Earth; there is always room for improvement and someone coming along behind you to teach.
